Water soluble CBD formulations are seemingly all the rage lately. Manufacturers promise increased absorption and therefore are proclaimed to have better effects. CBD (Cannabidiol) is a fat-loving molecule and will not mix well with water. The premise of trying to make CBD more water friendly is a good idea as our own bodies are comprised of mostly water (over 60%). These hazy looking, water-soluble “cloud” tinctures do mix better into some water based drinks. They often show this when a few drops are added to water. Manufacturers then make claims of superiority to traditional CBD “oils”. The problem though is when this water is swallowed you will still only see between 5-15% maximum oral absorption of CBD as it passes through the digestive system. How do we improve the absorption of these oils and tinctures then? The best way to improve oral absorption will be to simply allow as much of the dosage as possible to be absorbed sublingual under the tongue. The oil will cross the mucosal layers of the mouth and will be absorbed directly into the blood stream. Don’t believe the hype and don’t pay for the gimmicks! Stay well…
